WHAT ARE DIPYRIDAMOLE EYE DROPS?

Dipyridamole is a drug that has been in use by tens of millions of people for close to 60 years for treating cardiovascular conditions such as angina. It is a drug with little toxicity that does not suppress the immune system not cause cancer. The typical daily dose (in pill form) is 200 – 400mg.

Dipyridamole eye drops are a new way of using dipyridamole, for different conditions described below. The concentration of dipyridamole in these eye drops is very low--it amounts to just over 4 micrograms per drop - or 0.0004% (1/25,000th) of the daily oral dose.

WHAT ARE DIPYRIDAMOLE EYE DROPS GOOD FOR?

The use of dipyridamole as eye drops is a new method licensed from Remedeye Inc. in the United States. Dipyridamole eye drops are being investigated for a number of different eye disorders, for which they have so far been found to be helpful in non-formal trials. These conditions include:

  • Dry eye disease
  • Pinguecula
  • Pterygium
  • Cataract
  • Conjunctival nevus

ARE THE DROPS APPROVED BY THE FDA?

Since the dose of dipyridamole in these eye drops is very small, it falls into the classification of a “dilute homeopathic formulation” that does not need FDA approval, which avoids the 10-15 years it normally takes for new drugs to be approved and made available to the public.

ARE THE DROPS SAFE TO USE?

The concentration of dipyridamole in these eye drops is very low--it amounts to 0.0004% (1/25,000th)of the daily oral dose. These drops have what is known as a “high safety margin” (ratio of eye drop concentration vs. usual oral concentration), higher than the safety margin of the eye-antibiotic Vigamox® by approximately 30 times and the dry-eye drug Restasis® by approximately 40 times.

ARE THE DROPS STERILE?

Yes. All our eye drops have been sterilized in accordance with pharmacopoeia standards and prepared under sterile conditions.

ARE THE DROPS PRESERVATIVE-FREE?

Yes.

WHAT OTHER INGREDIENTS ARE THERE IN THE EYE DROPS?

We use sterile water and a sterile electrolyte (mineral) base to ensure that the drops are compatible with the eye surface and avoid irritation. We adjust pH to ~ 6.3

HOW OFTEN SHOULD THE DROPS BE APPLIED?

Some people find that using the drops twice a day is enough to alleviate their symptoms. There is no concern about applying them as frequently as needed but it is possible that more frequent application will not necessarily improve the results.

HOW LONG WILL IT BE UNTIL I SEE AN EFFECT?

If the drops work for you, you should see and/or feel an alleviation of your symptoms fairly quickly. However, the more severe your condition, the more time it may take. To see a reduction in pterygium, pinguecula, cataract and nevus, a lengthy continuous use of the drops will be necessary (possibly as long as 6 – 15 months). However, secondary dry eye symptoms associated with these conditions have generally responded in days to weeks.

ARE THERE KNOWN SIDE EFFECTS?

Dipyridamole is a very safe drug and is being used in minute quantities; side effects other than some stinging upon application to the eye have not been seen. The stinging may feel worse when the drops are very cold.

DO I NEED TO REFRIGERATE THE DROPS?

After opening, the drops should be refrigerated to maintain sterility. They do not need to be refrigerated before opening, but will last longer if they are.

HOW CAN DISCOMFORT FROM APPLYING THE DROPS BE REDUCED OR AVOIDED?

To reduce or avoid discomfort, wait for the drops to warm up a little before use rather than using them straight out of the refrigerator.

HOW LONG WILL THE DROPS BE GOOD FOR?

Based on current knowledge, the drops maintain their strength until at least 3 months from manufacturing date. However, the drops should be used within 2 weeks of opening (and stored refrigerated) to retain sterility. Extended studies are ongoing to determine the maximum shelf-life with or without refrigeration.

DO I NEED A PHYSICIAN’S PRESCRIPTION TO ORDER THE DROPS?

A prescription is not needed for homeopathic formulations. However, by ordering on this site you confirm that you are receiving medical guidance in how to use these products. We are not able to advise on the usage of these products, dosages or frequency of administration as that must be done by your healthcare practitioner.
