“Ouch!” We all experience pain sometimes. Although it can be unpleasant, pain exists for a purpose.

Pain is the way our body warns us of danger. An example of this is the pain we feel when we touch something very hot. A serious burn could result if pain wasn’t there to alert us to withdraw our hand. If it didn’t hurt to walk on a broken leg, we would continue to do so, which would prevent the leg from healing. Pain is a message from our minds that is trying to protect us from physical harm, and it's controlled by our brain’s assessment of our own safety needs.
